Miami Beach's lowest paid workers are one step closer to a hard-fought raise.

City commissioners gave preliminary approval Wednesday to raising Miami Beach's ``living wage'' -- something that hasn't been done in nine years.

The city's living wage, which applies to city employees and those working for contractors with agreements worth $100,000 or more, has remained at the 2001 level of $8.56 an hour for employees receiving benefits.

The amendment given tentative approval Wednesday would bring the wage to $11.28 with benefits or $12.92 without benefits by October 2012.
