SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- San Jose's new living wage kicks in Friday for companies that contract with the city.

If those companies provide health insurance, the new minimum wage becomes $13.59 per hour, an increase of 65 cents per hour. If they do not provide health benefits, the new minimum wage is $14.84.

The San Jose City Council passed a living wage ordinance in 1998 making it the highest living wage city in the country. Back then, a booming tech industry and high housing costs were driving up the cost of living in the Silicon Valley and driving out lower wage workers.

This wage is only for companies which contract with the city.
