As we speak, there's a City Council hearing -- and a wide variety of protests and demonstrations -- going on in NYC, focused on the hot-button legislation that would require employers on larger city-funded projects to pay workers more than the minimum wage. City Council members Brad Lander and Melissa Mark Viverito are livetweeting the hearing.

Demonstrators who back the legislation swarmed City Hall Park in advance of the hearing.

The Bloomberg Administration opposes the legislation as a job-killer, as our Daniel Beekman reported today: "A controversial City Council bill that would force companies in city-subsidized developments to pay their workers more than minimum wage would ruin projects in the Bronx, the Bloomberg administration insists."

To counteract that, there's a study conducted by 13 economists and release by the National Employment Law Project, the Fiscal Policy Institute and Good Jobs New York which claims a million-dollar living-wage study commissioned by the NYC Economic Development Corporation (which we blogged about here) is flawed.

Today is a big day for protests in NYC: Demonstrators have fanned out all over the place, operating under the umbrella of The May 12 Coalition, which also has a report out which (as I noted in a column for our print editions) pushes Mayor Bloomberg to forego what he says are necessary budget cuts in favor of coming down on the financial industry to "pay its fair share."

Here are a few examples of today's protest activities:
