The New York Theological Seminary’s Micah Institute has named Pastor Anita Burson as the 2011 Ella Baker Fellow. Rev. Burson will be working in the cause of economic justice with the Living Wage NYC coalition.

The clergy, labor, community coalition is fighting for passage of the Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act, which is now in front of the NYC Council. The Act would require developers that receive public subsidies to pay their employees a living wage of $10 an hour with benefits, or $11.50 without.

Rev. Burson says, “As the Ella Baker Fellow, I am excited to be a part of the Living Wage NYC Campaign. It is particularly meaningful to me because I vividly recall meeting Ella Baker as a child! I am grateful to my colleague in ministry, Rev. Osagyefo Sekou, for supporting me for this Fellowship as he returns to academia at Harvard University.

“The ongoing struggle for economic justice in the 21st Century requires us to keep building and sustain the historic bridge between the civil rights and labor movements. Having a strong woman’s voice at the table is as important now as it was during the life of Ella Baker.”

A fifth generation member of the clergy, Rev. Burson is the Pastor of the Elpida Community Church of Christ Baptist, Brooklyn. A native of Henderson, NC, she remembers with great clarity her father, the late Dr. O. B. J. Burson, leading civil rights demonstrations during her childhood.

Baker was raised in a nearby town, and Rev. Burson shares her commitment to fighting for justice. She has a long history of working with religious leaders, religious organizations and the laity across denominational lines and faith traditions. Rev. Burson is active with the Interfaith Center of New York, 2nd Vice President of the NAACP Brooklyn Chapter, and holds membership in various denominational, social and fraternal organizations.

To get involved, contact Rev. Burson at 212-684-5300, or email livingwagenyc@gmail.com.
